Aldea Restaurant is a small Spanish influenced restaurant located about 5 minutes walk from Union Square.
Given that Aldea is a Michelin-starred restaurant, we were expecting a little amuse-bouche from the kitchen. Instead, all we got was a small slice of bread and olive oil (the garlic was for decoration), and on top of that they were quite slow with the bread refill.
Appetizers
Chickpea and Bacalhau salad - watercress, parsley, pickled shallots. A nice light salad.
Mussel soup - chorizo, fennel, coconut curry. Quite good.
Entrées
Free-range chicken breast, chickpea and kale stew, red beets
Skate wing, spaghetti squash, parsnip-cider purée, brown butter
Both entrées were rather disappointing. The chicken was undercooked, while the fish dish was ordinary and boring.
Desserts
Chocolate Tart - pistachio dragées, saffron crème fraiche sorbet, candied piri-piri peppers
Cinnamon rice pudding, vanilla poached quince, pomegranate frozen yogurt, whipped cinnamon chocolate
The Serbian pastry chef Uskokovic certainly has a gift for creating incredible desserts. In fact, these were the best desserts we had during our trip. While Aldea's main dishes were a let-down, these two desserts helped redeem the restaurant. We'll be happy to return just for a sampling of their dessert menu.
