Daytrip for this Monday: Nikko, a mountain town 140km north of Tokyo famous for its shrines and temples.
Before entering Tokyo Station, we noticed some folks gazing at the sky and taking photos.
It was actually a full annular solar eclipse that had just started! Had a quick glimpse and snapped a photo.
Since we didn't have any eye protection, there was no point lingering for longer, plus we had a Shinkansen train to catch. Here are some pictures of the spectacular ring of fire that appeared a while later.
Once in Nikko, we took a bus to the Shinkyo (sacred) bridge
before walking towards the world heritage sites.

We had a late lunch at Asaya restaurant. Nikko is known for its yuba (tofu skin). For centuries, Buddhist ascetics and priests (i.e. strict vegetarians) have consumed yuba for its high protein content. We tried a selection of yuba dishes and some soba noodles.
Back in Tokyo, we went to the Ikebukuro neighborhood. After some shopping, including at Cando, a 100-Yen store with all sorts of unimaginable gadgets for the house, we had a quick dinner at Lotteria, a Japanese fast-food restaurant chain.
We ordered their original shrimp burger, which was actually pretty good.
where NamjaTown's Ice-Cream World was awaiting us (next post).
